You may not have heard of this form of omega 6 fatty acids. But this fatty acid can help you live longer. According to a recent study, males who had the highest amount of linoleic acid in their blood were 43 less likely to die than those with the least amount. But this form of omega fatty acids has many other health benefits as well. It prevents build up of liver fat, and it enhances glucose and insulin metabolism as well. Linoleic acid also lowers your LDL cholesterol and can lower the risk of coronary heart disease according to a study by Harvard School of Public Health Researchers. So now you may ask how can I increase my consumption of Linoleic acid? A great form is flax seeds or flax seed oil. An easy way to eat more flax oil is to replace all or half your oil in your salad dressing with flax seed oil. Add ground flax seeds to your oatmeal, pancakes, smoothies or even if you’re feeling a brunch vibe, to your pancakes. Other great forms of Linoleic acid are walnuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, borage oil, pine nuts, pistachios, and Acai. Keep in mind that there other foods containing Linoleic acid which may be refined (such as corn oil safflower oil) and do not contain all the nutrients so it’s best to consume organic and unprocessed when possible.
Here’s a great recipe (refined sugar free, yay!) to get you started:
Easy Banana Blueberry Flax Bread
½ cup organic blueberries
2 over ripe bananas, mashed
1 ½ heaping cups whole wheat or gluten free flour
2 organic eggs
1/3 cup grapeseed oil
½ t salt
1 T fresh ground organic flax seeds
2/3 cup maple syrup
1 ½ t baking soda
Optional add in: crushed walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees . Mix all the ingredients together and pour into a rectangular loaf pan. Bake for one hour or until inserted toothpick into middle of banana bread comes out clean. Enjoy, and live long and prosper!!!
