Meditation Made Simple

Do you ever feel yourself wondering “where did the time go?” Days, weeks, and months seem to pass by on hyper speed and suddenly you blink, and another year is done. The feeling can be overwhelming. But, what if I told you that you could slow down your perception of time and improve your mental clarity? It’s not magic; it’s the practice of daily meditation. I’ve experienced the benefits firsthand, and so can you. Meditation is very easy to practice and has profound effects. It can literally change how you see the world. When I first began, I noticed that everything around me looked clearer. I saw beauty in places that I hadn’t seen before, and life started to slow down.

In fact, meditators actually have a younger biological age compared to non-meditators, according to a study by Wallace, RK, et al. From a scientific standpoint, meditation can lengthen telomeres (the segments of DNA that occur at the end of chromosomes). This in turn can slow down the appearance of aging by suppressing inflammation, decreasing the appearance of wrinkles later on, according to

The good news is, there are many ways to meditate. I’ve practiced mediation in the confines of my own home and at the end of a yoga class in savasana pose. But, one of my favorite ways to meditate when I’m pressed for time and feel like I need a quick de-stressing session is a method I learned from my favorite book, “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert: Smiling. A Balinese healer told Gilbert, “To meditate, only you must smile, smile with face, smile with mind, and good energy will come to you and clean away dirty energy. Even smile in your liver”.
